Your Mind at Work
"the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma."- Patrick Star
After 1,000+ therapeutic clinical hours and 6+ years of coaching conversations in workshops and 1-on-1s, I’ve observed a common thread: our mind working for and against us. Often doing both simultaneously. How infuriating! What to do about it?
So, I decided to make this substack as a place to explore insights from real coaching conversations, research, music and art, and the occasional philosophical musing. I get a lot of my life lessons from music and my professional work, and I am excited to put it onto digital paper. Sometimes posts will be well thought through, other times off the cuff. If you are willing, come along on the journey!
My friend Elise makes fun of me for being the “quote guy,” so be ready for some quality quotes from great philosophers (like the sea star above).
What’s happening
Our minds are working 24/7: impacting our beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and relationships, and most of us don’t even realize how our mind is influencing our day. Fear, boredom, addictive scrolling, dysfunction, obsession, pleasure, joy— all influence how we spend our money, time, and energy. If two to five minutes of reading this can give you some insight or inspiration, that would be meaningful to me! With my personality, there’s a 100% chance I am going to write something profoundly challenging—a spicy take, as the kids call it. If it sparks something in you and you want to talk through it, I’d love to do that in real-time outside of the comments section. My calendar link is easy to find!
At work
Wordplay aside, I work in professional coaching meaning many of my thoughts come back to the workplace. I have come to notice (and experience) the profound impact that our workplace has on our mental well-being, our stress, our thought processes, and more. One week recently I felt disrespected and gas-lit in a work situation. I have been learning to process those emotions, choose serenity (accept the things I can/can’t control), and move on with a forgiveness that walks hand-in-hand with updated boundaries and new information (ie- who/what to avoid).
In my coaching work at BRDGE, I often see how people have lost confidence, clarity, or competitive edge somewhere along the way. I want Your Mind at Work to do whatever a little newsletter can to help you on your path. Your mind is (hopefully) working at work, so let’s get it working for you!
